At this year’s QuakeCon, everyone gave ear to Todd Hollenshead’s (id Software CEO) keynote as he announced that 90’s FPS Quake III: Arena will be coming to the XBLA. However, I am more keen about the great programmer John Carmack’s quote, who dares to bring old first person shooting spree to Nintendo’s DS. During his keynote, Carmack mentioned that he would love to bring Quake franchise to the NDS, especially because of its wi-fi & wireless capabilities.

However, the fundamental work of XBLA version has been started at Pi Studios, but not all contracts have yet been finalized in favor of the handheld version.

The thing about the DS version that makes me dumbfound is the absence of touch-screen feature in the title i.e. unlike Doom and Metroid Prime Hunters, no longer will you be able to relish ‘touch controlled’ feature of Nintendo’s dual-screen system in the game.

Having taken an idea from Metroid Prime Hunters, new underway project is supposed to be a rebuilt version of the old title with some new added elements i.e. Quake III: Arena would take in some elements from Doom II as well.

Both, ‘Doom’ and ‘Quake’ are franchises that we received in late 90’s and saw the FPS genre growing, now once again id Software revivifies oldies to diverse platforms.

No release date has been mentioned, but we are pretty sure that we will be able to secure a copy of the handheld version of the game sometime this Charismas.
